Humpback Whale Expedition – French Polynesia
We spent several days on the water in French Polynesia searching for humpback whales during their annual migration. Each morning began with scanning for blows or splashes, then approaching slowly to see whether the whales were resting, socializing, or actively moving. Some encounters were brief, while others allowed us to stay in the water and observe them for longer periods.
We met mothers with calves, resting pairs, and occasionally larger groups. Calm conditions made the in-water experience especially memorable — floating quietly while a whale approached or circled back on its own terms. Other days were windier or less productive, but still offered valuable time on the ocean and insight into their behaviour.
Overall, the trip was a mix of searching, waiting, and rewarding encounters that highlighted why French Polynesia is one of the best places to see humpback whales in a natural, respectful way.
